Mullard did not make a 5751.
When you a/b...Steve,

Mullard did not make a 5751.

When you a/b'd real 5751s vs GT You are doing this sonically I would bet. If you measure TC or any factor they are as different as two tubes can be. A 12AT7 and 12AX7 would be closer.

The 12AX7M was not intended to be a low gain tube. The first runs were wonderful and high gain compared to other 12AX7s on the market at the time. Each production run was worse than the last in both performance and reliability.

Many folks like them in noisy amps as their low gain masks the amp's design deficiencies.

Myles
myles111ushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05727652448443356303noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9096804090522313433.post-17170000392751049942012-10-19T17:39:45.445-07:002012-10-19T17:39:45.445-07:00Thanks for all of that information! However I have A/B'd them with my favorite GE 5 star 5751's in several different amps and think that they are very similar- closer than some of the other NOS 5751's that I have.

I didn't realize that the 12AX7M was low gain to begin with- I really like that tube a lot in many of my amps- I wish I would have gotten more of them when I could. I never did try either of them as a phase inverter- for that I usually like a clear strong 12AX7 that is well balanced.

I agree with your suggestion that the 5751M be given a new tube designation. I think that they are really nice tubes and stand up well when compared to my favorite NOS tubes.

Steve AholaSteve Aholahttp://www.blueguitar.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9096804090522313433.post-55996473232802968982011-06-18T08:40:25.636-07:002011-06-18T08:40:25.636-07:00You may want to consider a few phase inverters as ...You may want to consider a few phase inverters as it is a matter of personal preference and taste but also, having a few can open up options.

At a rational cost, I would have a Sovtek 12AX7LPS long plate and a Tung Sol Reissue (or EH) short plate. You could then swap them. The long plate will drive the output section in a more articulate way and not break down as fast. The short plate will break down a bit faster and this breakdown will be passed along to the output set so you can crank the amp a bit higher in smaller venues or where you want the distortion to come on more quickly.

Be sure you get tubes that are close to design spec. There are a number of tube vendors that can do that but here are a few I use myself:

www.kcanostubes.com
www.dougstubes.com
www.tubedepot.com

Happy playing.

MylesMyleshttp://www.mylesrose.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9096804090522313433.post-15839361359865340782011-06-18T00:49:34.361-07:002011-06-18T00:49:34.361-07:00All this information is TRULY APPRECIATED, Myles. ...All this information is TRULY APPRECIATED, Myles.
