It has a long life and a curve trace that is most close to the classic tubes of the past.

I have not seen anybody have a problem fitting an EL84 in a Vox AC30. There are bottle size specs that all tube need to follow. On occasion, there are some Chinese tubes where the bottle diameter was too large to fit in some amps of some types that had PCB mounted output tube sockets and an aluminium guard with holes over the PCB that were too small for oversize, non-spec, bottle diameter. JJ was not one of the folks with this issue.

Higher voltages are used for reliability testing. Tube design spec voltages are used to see if the tube even meets design specs.

Most folks I know shy away from the dark and muffled sounding Russian EL84 variants, especially the EL84M variant.myles111ushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05727652448443356303noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9096804090522313433.post-8200326547875728382017-09-28T08:11:03.040-07:002017-09-28T08:11:03.040-07:00Tube selection is a personal taste issue. You should get some sort of report with any, and every tube your purchase. As you can see in the test results provided here, even in the same batch there is a huge degree of variation. Just because a tube is "new" it is not even good or always a working tube at all. Many vendors cut out testing and just rely on their warranty of replacement if there is a problem. With most folks, the hassle of reboxing and shipping is not worth the effort and just toss the tube if it just a dual triode.

There are some great vendors in the UK. These are my favorite folks on your side of the pond.

https://www.watfordvalves.com/

myles111ushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05727652448443356303noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9096804090522313433.post-25944531898425527872017-09-28T04:18:18.991-07:002017-09-28T04:18:18.991-07:00Myles,

Fascinating and highly useful insights to be found here.
I stumbled across it because I'm in the process of building an EAR834 phono stage pre-amp, largely following notes, gudance (and a link to here) from 'Spaceistheplace' who can be found, along with much else that is fine, at the Lencoheaven forum.
I've selected Mesa Boogie SPAX7 (no idea what Mk. they are) to fill the V1 and V3 positions and NOS Sylvania 12AX7A ECC83 (7025) for the V2 slot. Do you believe that these valves will be subject to the same degree of inconsistency/uncertainty/variability that you talk about elsewhere? Also, given that I'm in the UK, how should i go about finding a vendor I can trust? Your questions are answered in depth ...Hello Alex,

Your questions are answered in depth on my GAB website. I will say that a 12AT7 is an awful tone generator. It is better as a reverb driver or phase inverter. If you want to drop the front end gain use a 12AY7 or 5751.

The Mullard reissue from New Sensor is just a Sovtek 12AX7LPS. It is an OK tube if supplied by a vendor who knows how to test properly. The ECC83S will compress quickly and I personally do not care for them as phase inverters.

In the end it is all personal taste and preference. There is a lot of tube info on my GAB website that was written to answer questions like yours.
myles111ushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05727652448443356303noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9096804090522313433.post-35343976537039678522015-01-13T09:08:04.151-08:002015-01-13T09:08:04.151-08:00Hi Myles, I'm Alex from Italy. I have a Brunetti 059red, a channels switching head with 6 12ax7 pre and 4 el34 output. Is it possible to change a 12ax7 with a 12at7 or other kind without issues? I've found on internet forums many conclusions about that and is not so clear to me. I know that is not only about gain there...I would like to know what kind of difference can we have if we put a 12at7 where 12ax7 is written on the manual? For instance not only in V1 but in loop position?? I've found a PDF where you talk about 12at7 in PI position, and i am curious to know if is possible in loop also (good results?) I have Mullard 12ax7 RI in V1 and V2(clean); JJecc83s in V3 V4 (crunch-solo ch), V5 loop and V6 PI/splitter/driver. For V5 and V6 i have available one 12at7 Mullard CV4024 KQDD/k and one Sovtek 12ax7lps. Any suggestions? Thank You for a kind answer to my question!
Alex Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9096804090522313433.post-77122501660693535272014-12-10T09:51:30.580-08:002014-12-10T09:51:30.580-08:00I look at tubes in a technical way and post the fi...I look at tubes in a technical way and post the findings. Listening is subjective and there is no right, wrong, good or bad. But, inconsistent performance, bad curves, tubes far from design spec ... well, those are facts. I've found these tubes to be great for hifi, especially in vintage audio equipment. Just curious because of your strongly worded entry above. Great writing, but I wanted to see where it was based from. And yes, they are freaking expensive. I agree with that wholeheartedly.
